Pakistan’s economy has exploded in the past 20 years, and the trend is expected to continue for many years to come. The reason for the economic growth is mainly because of the expanding industries and the many foreign investments Pakistan has been receiving. While this has resulted in the percent of Pakistanis living in poverty falling from 64.3 percent in 2001 to 21.9 percent in 2018, the environment has not experienced the same positive development.
Pakistan's gross domestic product (GDP) has grown a lot in the last 20 years.
Much of the clothing bought in Europe originate from Pakistan.
When we buy clothes our here in the western world, there is a great chance they weren't produced in a nearby country. Textiles, chemicals, computers, and other products are often manufactured in less developed nations like Pakistan, where labour is much cheaper. One of the many problems with this, is that it becomes way harder to control how the products are made. In 2019 two-thirds of Pakistan’s energy came from fossil fuels and only 6% from renewables like wind and solar. If the products for instance were made in Denmark, the energy would almost certainly come from more environmentally friendly sources and have a smaller impact on our earth. Last year Pakistan emitted over 217 million tonnes of CO2 in total (almost six times that of Denmark), however emissions per capita of Pakistan is still quite low compared to other countries.
According to studies Pakistan is the world's fourth most polluted country today. This is often considered a result of the massive industrial boom the country has been undergoing, in order to supply the world with products and goods. This aspect of globalization is a huge problem not only for the people living in Pakistan, but for everyone on the planet. If the Pakistani government made the environmental regulations stricter, the production would probably just move to another country, and many Pakistanis would lose their job.
Pakistan is currently ranked the 4th most polluted country in the world.
Most of their energy comes from non-renewable sources like coal and oil.
